02 May, 2020 - Baking Bread & Temperamental Rain
Dear, Mom -
Well. Wouldn't you know I finally baked my loaf of gluten-free bread this evening! *Ahem* Unfortunately, I don't think I used the right kind of yeast. It was supposed to be a large loaf with lots of fluff to it. Instead I got a short, dense loaf that feels like brick. It did cook all the way through, but there is just something that isn't quite right. This is the first loaf of bread I've ever baked (with the exception of the early 90s when I had a bread machine and you would just buy the pre-made mixes: doesn't count). I will have to ask Paula what went wrong. She'll know. She is the one who gave me the yeast, so maybe it was one I needed to activate before putting it in the dough? I'll find out tomorrow and I will also let you know how it tastes! This is a picture of my loaf:
This is a blue lilac tree that I planted in my front yard some years ago. I thought it was a blue lilac bush, so I am afraid I may have to cut it down because our gas line runs underneath it and I'm afraid the roots may interfere with that. That would not be good. I figure I will use the wood for my carving, so it won't go to waste. I do hate to take it down, but I will wait until it is no longer in bloom. People comment on how pretty it is. Especially because it have variegated leaves. I adore variegated plants, that's why I choose this one. Live and learn, as they say.I'm sorry we haven't talked over the video chat in a while. I will try and see if Sandahl can arrange that for us at the beginning of the week. I am hoping to take Tuesday/Thursday off as wellness days, so I can putter around the house and outside. If it were under different circumstances, I would just take the dog and go camping for 3 or 4 days. That will have to wait, though. I would go here:
I love you bunches, Mom. I want more than anything to give you a big hug and a big smooch. I want to eat some cookies with you and have a cup of coffee. We will sometime in future. We can't give up hope. You're the best mom ever. You are so talented and I brag about you all the time. "My mom is the best baker, seamstress, painter, accountant, puzzle completer, wood worker...". The list goes on and on. I guess what I'm saying is, "I'm really proud of you and all you've accomplished and I'm extremely proud to be your daughter."๐Good night for now, Mom! Have a lovely Sunday!!! Your Daughter, Sally๐

And this is a picture of the loaf I was trying to achieve and the recipe I followed.
Not even close...oh, well.
I took my containers of garden starts and moved them onto the porch last evening because I heard we were going to get some rain. I figured that meant we would have some down pours. I wasn't wrong. Had I left all my starts along the house, they would have been drowned and I would have had to start all over again. Thank goodness for hindsight. Most of my seeds have sprouted. The cucumbers are still trying to push through. I can see two very small starts. My tomatoes aren't going to do anything I don't think. I may just have to bite the bullet and buy some 4" starts and plant them. Before I can do any planting, I still need to rototill my garden plot in the back yard. I figure after a weekend of rain, the soil should be nice and loosened up so that I can really get in there and turn it well. I will be putting a couple of raised beds that I am building myself. Cross your fingers for me!
