05 May, 2020 - Smelling Roses & A Little Whittlin'

Dear, Mom -

Hello, Mom (and any dear friends that might be listening :) -

Today, I was excited to see that all but 2 of my seed containers had starts coming up. The sandwich tomatoes have not yet surfaced. I am hoping I did not plant them too deep. My basil has a couple of little starts which is awesome because I love to cook with basil! I plan on adding some 4" starts from the Linnton Feed & Seed store of strawberries, another tomato variety, jalapeƱo (for spicing up pinto beans and salsas), carrots ( I can't believe I forgot carrots), and I may try planting some potatoes, too. I found some nifty, cloth growing bags that are inexpensive and will help me to get starts on to their next phase if my raised beds aren't yet done. They have handles so you can move them around, if necessary. Do you have any ideas of seeds or starts I should add to my garden? Please let me know! This is what the containers look like. I will get a few 5 gallon and a few 15 gallon for my cucumbers and strawberries.
Wish me luck! I'm hoping this will be cheaper than buying wood and a ton of soil to fill raised beds.
They even say you can pick the root vegetable right out of the bottom of the bag without upsetting the topsoil. This is very interesting and I look forward to investigating it more.

Today, I took a walk and was so glad to see roses blooming! They are my favorite (next to wild bachelor buttons and dianthus) because I am not allergic to them. Lilacs are nice, but I'm allergic. Honeysuckle, lilies, any sweet smelling flower = allergic :(

The roses had such a tame, light smell that was gently sweet. Perfect for dabbing on your wrist; a nice rose oil.
The colors were mainly hues of reds and pinks, but I would assume that is the growers preference and not because the yellow or white variety wasn't ready for spring. Time will tell. The best part of flowers is that they are like snowflakes: can anyone guess that scientific fact?
That's right! "No two are alike."
Just look how the petals layer upon one another. It's like watching a flamenco dancer in mid-twirl! Hurry! Someone put on some Anita O' Day singing "Honeysuckle Rose"!
Anyway, I will continue to take more pictures of roses as the shades and hues span the spectrum. Until then, enjoy these few pictures and just pretend you can smell their lovely aroma.

This evening, I started carving my first spoon. It is just a small spoon. It will be about the size of a sugar spoon. I am making it for my best friend Kim because she loves handmade, wooden goods. Holly was pretty impressed in what I had done in about an hour's time. Right now, it still needs lots of trimming and scooping, but it is getting there slowly, but surely. What do you think?

I should have put a quarter in the picture for size reference, but don't worry, I will take a picture as it progresses so you can see the transformation.

I also had a slight conversation with a couple of girls today. They were very pretty, but I couldn't understand a word they said:
Today is the 5th of May, or Cinco de Mayo, AND also the birthday of my friend's mini horse named Buckeye. He is just one year old today, but boy oh boy, is he a cutie! Just look at that hair do! I usually call my dog Elsa the reincarnation of Phyllis Diller, but I think this guy may tie for first place.
Ha ha ha ha.

I will end with a close up picture I took of a Peony today. I think it is absolutely gorgeous. It is the middle of the flower and the bud is still unfolding. The colors are great. I might frame this one.

I hope you are having a wonderful day. Please feel some sunshine today. Sit on the patio and enjoy the breeze on your face. Think of me sitting with you on the deck looking out at the Blue Mountains back in Milton-Freewater. Our imaginations can take us anywhere we want! So you might as well add some chocolate cake and coffee, too!

I love you, Mom. Super big HUG and Super big SQUEEZE.
Hello and hugs and squeezes to all.
Your Gal, Sal
