11 May, 2020 - Rainy Days & Dog Walkin'

Dear, Mom -

It was so nice to see and talk to you today over the video chat. You looked very well and happy. I am so glad.

This entry will be a bit short as it is already 11 o'clock at night and I have been excessively tired today. I'm ready to hit the pillow and float off to dream land.

Elsa and I had a nice walk this morning. The air was fresh in the the park among the trees. The breeze was gentle and made the leaves sing as it meandered through. You could hear a Northern Flicker quite loud in the conifer tops. It was like a politician giving a speech; punchy, pronounced, and repetitive. This is what it sounded like:

They are gorgeous birds. They are mid-sized like a peregrine falcon. There coloration is very earthy with the exception of the bright red spot at the back of the head. The juveniles sport the spot right on their cheeks. They always look like they are blushing. The pattern on the wings is one we'd never think to mix and match with clothes, but it looks fantastic on a Flicker. Just look at that spotted belly.
Anyway, the Flicker went on and on, as did we. The sun was playing hide and seek along with Elsa and I. As we walked on a bit further, one of Elsa's acquaintances came up to give her a sniff. He is such an unusual looking dog. Very handsome. A brindle dog with some Chow Chow and Husky and a sprinkle of surprise dog. He is very sweet and usually just trots up, says hello, then trots back to his human. We walked back to the car and by the time we got home, the was just another cloudy day.
As I was looking at some of the flowers on the block, I found a couple I thought you would enjoy the colors of:
The little bushels in the top picture are Indian Rhubarb, or Umbrella plant. The pink with yellow centers are Pink Evening Primroses.  They are paper thin and the yellow really makes you take notice. This is definitely the time for flower pictures. I would love to make a road trip out to the tulip fields in Woodburn. Actually, they have probably bloomed and gone by now. It's getting late for tulips.

I apologize that this letter is a bit sporadic, but I am so very tired and just didn't get up to much today. I will try to write a more quality letter tomorrow, ok?
All my love to you, Ma Dodd.
Your gal, Sal
