12 May, 2020 - Cut Rosemary & A Plot to Plant
Dear, Mom -
Hi. It's me, Sal. I'm just sitting down to write you a letter after a long day of cutting, trimming, tugging, tossing, digging, etc. I got the front weeded and ready for a dirt delivery next Monday. Finally, the yard will look quite presentable as you meander from the front of Paula's house to ours. It's still no match, but I sure feel better about it. I took out a huge hunk of rosemary, but left one small bush so that I could still use it to cook with. The cleared area will either be a Little Library area for the our block, or I may try putting extra dirt and planting corn and onions there. I like the Little Library idea. I think it will be fun to build a unique, book holder. I think I would make a science fiction themed one since Holly and I love sci-fi so much. I've seem one of these libraries that looks like the Tardis from Dr. Who. Ya know, the British police box that the Dr. flies around in? No? It's ok. Doesn't matter. It will just be a fun project. I may build a bench so people can rest and look at the books. I'll keep you updated on that...
I was looking at some facts about South Dakota today. I looked at some of the stats from the town of Lead, specially. At its peak, it was only about 3,000 people. Back when Grandpa was a gold miner and you were born there. But it was a thriving town. Now the mine has been shut for years, but they have started a lab there instead (Sanford Lab) which studies aspects of nuclear physics along with a museum about the Homestake Gold Mine. This town would have died if the lab did not move in. It saved the rehoming of many people because the lab offered jobs and more people work there now to keep the population up like it was in the early 1900s. I also found a cute, little poem about South Dakota:
You can see Elsa in the foreground in the shade of the elephant tree. Keep in mind that it has just started blooming. In another day or so, it will be packed with petite roses.

It's Winter in South Dakota.
And the gentle breezes blow.
Seventy mile an hour,
At thirty-five below.
Oh, how I love South Dakota,
when the snow's up to your butt.
You take a breath of winter air
and your nose gets frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful,
so I guess I'll stick around.
I could never leave South Dakota,
'cause I'm frozen to the ground.
This is my hand, a bachelor button, and my boots.
This is my neighbor Asher's gorgeous Peony!
Tomorrow, I have to go to the darn store and get some declogger for the bathroom drain. Every year I take it apart and clean it, but this year it got really backed up. To the point that I can't reach far enough to unclog it. It's pretty disgusting, anyway. I spent about an hour trying tonight. I took it apart and put it back together, so I decided to call it a night and get some Drain-O tomorrow.
When I was ripping the rosemary bushes out, I found this little guy slowly making their way up a stock. I am not joking when I say the poor little snail looked very confused. I guess I had just ripped out their apartment building, in a sense. I felt bad, so I moved it under a fern.
And here is a picture of our ginormous rose bush that Paula the neighbor and I share. It is HUGE!

I better get to bed, Mom. I have to get up pretty early in order to get Birgit to her arthritis infusion by 9:30. I hope you have a lovely day today. I will talk to you very soon. Big Hugs and a Big Smooch
Much Love!
Sally Ann
