06 June, 2020 - Down Pours & These Crazy Times We Live In

Dear, Mom -

My goodness. It was really raining today. It was coming down hard and steady. I feared my little garden was going to drown. I pulled on my rain jacket and hat, laced up my boots, and ran out to find a tarp to drape over everything. Of course, by the time I got out there to place the tarp, the rain was much gentler and I decided to put the tarp over the wood for my future deck. It already has a tarp over it, but it is pretty weather worn and has some holes in it. The good news is that it looked like my garden starts all benefited from the rain and were looking very happy. I will take some more pictures in the next couple of days so you can see where the plants are in their growth cycle. I am delighted that my tomatoes are actually starting to grow multiple limbs and leaves. For a while there, I thought I had planted them too late. I'm learning that patience is important in gardening. I didn't hear any thunder today. I like to hear it, but it does scare Elsa the dog quite a bit, so I shouldn't wish for it, I suppose. I miss hearing it, though. I sound like a broken record. In Milton-Freewater it was nice to have actual storms, and snow, and good ole fashioned HOT summers. Living next to the Walla Walla River made summers easy. Even if the water was low in the river, there was always an irrigation ditch to swim in.

Here is a picture of the Nursery bridge going to our house back in Milton-Freewater. You can see the Walla Walla River and the debris that built up under the falls. The picture was taken not that many years ago, though, because when we used to swim in the falls, there wasn't a levee there to damn the water like there is now. The levee ends to at one end and then there is a spillway. My understanding is it helps to keep the newly, renovated bottom of the falls from eroding away. The falls hit water instead of rumbling and stirring the sediment. I'm sure it is also helpful for the fish when looking for the fish ladders to get up stream. That is partly speculation on my part, but it makes sense to me. Does it to you?

With the rain today, I didn't do anything outside, with the exception of taking Elsa the dog to the tall, tree park with the paved path. I took her there because she likes a ride in the car and because the tree canopy helped to keep us dry. I could have taken her to the other tall, tree park closer to our house, but she likes getting out and going for a ride. She ran all over the place and got some good exercise. There were some young men practicing baseball while we were there in one of the diamonds on the big, open field. Elsa wanted to chase the balls that were being hit out our way so bad. She would start to run towards them, I'd whistle, and she'd turn around and come back. She was awfully tempted, but listened to me really well and always came back. I put her on the leash anyway. I mainly keep her off for a short time just because she is a border collie breed and needs to have a good run a couple of times a day. She gets her 'zoomies' out and she goes back on.

Here are my mandatory (or so it seems) flower pictures. These are some of what is blooming in Paula's garden next door.

I don't suppose it is horrible to see pretty flowers all the time, but let me know if you need me to switch it up a bit. The variance in color is so nice. The water just adds the light and different textures to add to its allure.

It is 12:34 pm. I'm pulling a bit of a late night. I love you so very much and miss you to pieces. Please pretend I'm giving you a big squeeze and a big smooch. I just want to see you soooo bad. Soon, mom. Soon.... All My Love---Sally Ann
