12 July, 2020 - A Maturing Garden & Homemade Sloppy Joes

Dear, Mom -

Hello. I hope you had a wonderful yesterday and that today will be lovely, as well. I took the day off and did not do much of anything. I got up early to see if Elsa would go out to go potty (6:30 am). She was not interested. She is too scared to go to the bathroom at night and early in the morning because stupid people with no consideration of their neighbors are still letting off fireworks at night. It scares Elsa too much, so she keeps cowering in the bathroom at night. As long as she feels safe, that is the important thing.

My garden is really coming along. I mean, I don’t have a huge variety, but it makes me excited for learning how to plant all year long and prepping more beds for the fall. My cucumbers are coming along quite nicely. Too the point that I had to put up string for them to wind up to make room for all four plants.
Even though my basil is still very small, I was able to take off three leaves this morning and made a scramble of egg, basil, and fresh Parmesan cheese. It was very good and basil does wonders for flavor. It is one of my favorite herbs to use in cooking. I use basil and rosemary quite a bit. I need to go buy a more mature basil plant and put it in the bed in the open square. My tomatillos are getting so tall and have flowers, I am not familiar with how they grow, so it is fun to see what will happen next.
Look at how tall my sunflowers have grown. And they aren’t done yet. I can’t wait for them to flower! I may be able to harvest a fair amount of seeds off of them if I get a nice, big bloom. Fingers crossed...
My sandwich potatoes have grown so tall that I am starting to put up a string grid for the leaves and hopefully fruit to be supported as it matures. I didn’t get all the grid work done tonight because I was getting hungry and it was already 6 o’clock and time for dinner. I plan on finishing it tomorrow. I am getting a lot of blooms so I am hoping to get many tomatoes by mid-August.

Tonight for dinner, I thought I would try something new for dinner. I have never cooked sloppy joes before, so I got out a recipe and decided to try it with some ground turkey (no beef for this kid). I didn’t have any barbecue sauce, so I made some from scratch. I turned out really well. When everything was said and done I thought it turned out really well. It wasn’t runny, but just loose enough in the bun that is was definitely ‘sloppy’.

My next job that I am going to try and do is thoroughly sort through the mud room/storage room. When I organized it a couple of years ago, it was very tidy and most everything had a place. Well, you know what it’s like to own a home and accumulate ‘stuff’. We have all our tools, holiday boxes, automotive, garden, paint, and everything else you store out there and it is a MESS! Now that thrift stores seem to be taking things again, there are lots of items we can donate (not just from in storage, but everywhere in the house). I will make three piles; dump, donate, reorganize/keep. I hope to free up a lot of space back there. I don’t think we use at least half of the stuff back there anymore and I’d rather make it into a pantry to store dry goods and water for future use.
The X is the dog door that doesn’t get used anymore. I’m afraid a raccoon, possum, or skunk will make themselves at home if we keep it open and Elsa doesn’t seem to want to go out without us. We’ll see what happens in the future with that. As you can see, it will be a project for sure (and that’s only half of the room)!
