20 August, 2020 - Lovely Petrichor & The St. Johns Bridge

 Dear, Mom -

Hi, Mom. It was so great to talk to you today. I love to be able to see you while we talk. It makes me really happy. I’m glad you seemed to be having a fairly good day. Joy said you were really talking up a storm at lunch, which is fun to hear. I miss your stories! I wish I was there to share them with you.

Today, I worked with Bob for a bit. We went to a shady park and walked for a bit. Then I drove us down to the St Johns Bridge and read Bob the history of the bridge. It was built starting in 1928 and finished in 1931.  It was dubbed “The Grand Lady of Portland”. It is so funny. I have lived in this neighborhood for 13 years, just 10 blocks away from the bridge, and never before heard this part of history.

Our house would be just about where the left side of the picture is and a three blocks up. We aren’t that far away considering I walk Elsa that far most days. None of the industry you see in the picture is there anymore. They consumed so much of the local lumber, it didn’t take then long to exhaust it. The George W. Cone Lumber Company would load up ships like the one pictured and sail it out to the Pacific. I do love the bridge, though. It’s gothic arches are so pretty and perfectly aligned. It was quite the feat of engineering for that time in history.

It is raining out now. It has been for the last three hours of so. The smell of rain, or ‘petrichor’, is one of my favorite things about living here. I must say, especially after we’ve had such a long period of dry. It sounds, smells, and feels good on the skin in the warm evening residue turning to night. It is also great that I don’t have to drag the hose to the back of the house to water the garden. The sky is taking the responsibility and I am just fine with that...and so it our water bill. Haha. It feels like the welcome rain has also calmed people a bit. It is like the first big snow, the city just seems quieter some how. Maybe a bit more muted. Anyway, Holly and I just sat with the lights off, listening to the rain for a while tonight. It was really pleasant. Elsa was crashed out on her bed.

Well, it is a very early morning for me tomorrow. I have to get up at 6:30 and have Birgit to get her blood drawn by 8 am. We are hoping she can manage it. I don’t know if I can! That is so early and I don’t quite feel awake at that time. She has to have an infusion later in the day, though, and the nurses need to make sure everything looks good for her liver and blood cell count, etc. before they can go ahead.

With that said, I will bid you a farewell for now and leave you with a few pictures I managed to take today. All my love to you, Mom. You’re the best Mom EVER! Hugs and Kisses, —— Sally🥰
