01 September, 2020 - Our Dog Loves the Postal Carrier & A Good Long Walk ‘n’ Talk

 Dear, Mom -

Hi, Mom. I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to speak with you in the afternoon. I just have had a headache and was not feeling very well while I was at work. It’s nothing serious, just headaches and feeling a wee bit ‘off’. As soon as I came home, I stopped at Birgit’s to give her some information she needed about upcoming appointments, then I came home and laid down on the bed. Who knows. It may just be an iron deficiency. I am thinking of changing doctors, so I can get a fresh opinion from someone who has never seen me before. Or at least get a second opinion. Regardless of all that, I will talk to you soon and I’m feeling better than I did.

Our mail carrier’s name is Julie Anne and she is absolutely terrific. Both Elsa the dog and Rusty the dog (next door) LOVE her. They whine and wag their tails and giver her big kisses. She loves the dogs right back. I have never seen a mail carrier who loves dogs like Julie Anne. She looks forward to stops along her route where she gets love from animals. I guess the mail carriers are told not to befriend dogs because they could potentially turn around and bite you one day out of nowhere. Basically, they are trying to avoid a lawsuit. Our girl Julie Anne doesn’t care. Plus, it makes her job a lot easier when the dogs want to love on her and not bite her.

Julie Anne and Elsa the Dog
I love that we have a dog that loves the “mail man”. Funny enough, if Julie Anne doesn’t come and the dogs see a different mail carrier, they will bark their heads off. They just know that Julie Anne is going to give them a treat and give them some love. She is also the most impressive mail carrier we have had. She leaves us notes in our mail boxes when she plans on going on vacation, or if something is going to change. She’ll make sure your mail gets forwarded and won’t give you some one else’s mail. She is just great all around. She told us she may have to work on a different route. It makes us sad. And the dogs sad. Then we will be back to a mail carrier that doesn’t love on the dogs and it’s just business as usual in the animal kingdom. Woof woof woof!

I took pictures of the pumpkins we have coming on now. Technically, they will go to Paula because she planted them. She said this year they will be soup pumpkins instead of jack-o-lanterns. She may make something out of them for her restaurant.

Right now, the pumpkins are still pretty small. I think they will be an average size (about a foot across). They are only about 3/4th of that now. I hope they grow surprisingly bigger. I am being very careful to keep the insects from eating on them by putting squares of cardboard underneath them where they touch the ground. Next year, I am going to plant 6 or more pumpkin plants and just have a small pumpkin patch out front under the fir trees. They seem to grow really well in that acidic soil under the conifers. I’m sure I could make some neighborhood kids happy if I grew some pumpkins just for them.

Tonight, I took a walk with a neighbor of mine that has lived here as long as I have and we never met until recently. She lives just half a block away. It is so weird that I never noticed she and her family before. Anyway, her name is Lauren and she is super nice. We seem to have lots in common and we find it a bit therapeutic to talk to one another. So, we have decided to have a walk together at least once a week just to work out our stresses and have a neutral person to talk to. It’s really super helpful. I’m glad I’ve made a new friend, too.

I need to get to bed because before I know it it will be time to get up and walk the dog. And I am still on the tired side. I will talk to you very soon. Also, I have a brand new pair of slippers to give you from Paula and Birgit next door. You will love them. I will bring them next time I come ‘round for a visit (a week?).
Here’s a couple pictures. Enjoy!
