11 September, 2020 - Glasses & Kittens

 Dear, Mom -

Oh, goodness. It’s another day in paradise, as they say. Things are so weird out in the world, Ma. I’m glad you are somewhere that maintains a sense of normalcy. The sky looks wrong, it’s hot/ it’s cold, you have to wear a mask inside AND outside, I still can’t come see you..., (but that’s temporary...as I’m hoping all of this is), the sun looks like it is projected on the clouds, and your granddog can’t run at the dog park like dogs are supposed to because of the smoke in the air. I can only walk her for about six blocks then I have to take her home. I dunno. Things are just strange.

Anyway, I hope we can talk on Monday. I’m excited because I get to go pick up my new glasses Monday afternoon at 1. I will finally have a pair of bifocals again and won’t have to keep trading out my glasses for the right pair for whatever distance I am trying to see. Plus, it will be the correct prescription, although my last prescription sounded as though it had barely changed. When I chose my new frames, my years were still partially dilated so the eye doctor was very helpful in finding a good pair for me as I squinted to see them. They are made by the sports company Nike, which I wasn’t thrilled about, but they looked nice and were in my price range. I hope I like them as much when I get them. If I don’t, oh well. This kid just needs to see! I think they kind of looked like this:

A bit more square than my last pair, which is awesome because I looked like I was reliving the 1980s in those big, round ones that the millennial at the last glasses shop chose for me. Well, what are ya going to do? I just need to be thankful that I can afford a pair of glasses where someone out in the world has to go without. I will quit complaining and just count my blessings, right?

Elsa the dog was so funny this afternoon when I got home from work. She had not been out much for about 5 plus hours. Holly is at home working, but she can’t take Elsa out for a walk, just long enough to go on a quick potty break then she has to get back to work. Well, when I got back, Elsa was wound up like a watch raring to go. I let her out the gate and said, “Go get ‘em!”. That is her cued permission to go see if there is a squirrel down the block at Rob and Samantha’s house. She took off like a shot and started bouncing all over the place. She looked like a giant rabbit...bounce bounce bounce - bark bark bark...I’m not even sure she saw anything! She was running back and forth, looking up in the tree, then she ran down the block looking up at the power lines. I think she had so much pent up energy she was imagining a sky full of squirrels just dancing and taunting her. She was bonkers! It was so funny that I was just busting a gut laughing. Silly dog.

I took her over to Paula and Birgit’s for her early evening biscuits from Paula. She lives for that time of day...and squirrel. We started talking about cats because my neighbors down the street had just got this little guy:

What a sweetie tuxedo kitty! I don’t think they had named him yet. Their middle son had a beloved kitty that sadly passed away a couple of weeks ago. He really pined for that kitty after he died. Today, they decided he was ready for another kitty, so this is who they picked. Anyway, back to my point. Birgit was saying how she was sure all their cats had names. They were all Swedish barn cats that kept the rodent population at bay on the farm. They were fed and treated as family. They would travel between Birgit’s house and her Uncle’s house who lived a mile or so down the road. They would disappear during the day, but as soon as Birgit’s father went to the barn to milk the cow, they would walk in a little line up the drive way right to the cow and get some fresh milk. It was such a cute image. Birgit really likes cats, but has a dog instead. One day soon, we will get a kitty and Birgit will be able to love on it just like the cats she used to have back home.

I love you very much, Mom. I really hope I can come see you soon. I miss you horribly. I want you to always know how much I think about you every day and how much you mean to me. You are so special. Even our friend Bob says you are a special lady. One day before to long I will be able hug you for as long as I want to. It may take me a loooooooooong time to want to let go! Big HUGS and KISSES to you!
