18 October, 2020 - Yard Work & Great Neighbors
Dear, Mom -
How are you today? I hope you had a very nice day with the caregivers and your friends. Halloween is coming up in a couple of weekends, but I think this year it is going to be cancelled due to the virus that is going around. I’m sure there will be some houses that still give out candy, but I think there will be a real lack of participation of both giving out candy and children receiving it. It is too risky to receive something from strangers whom may have not washed their hands before giving handfuls of it to children. Germs travel on unwashed hands, so unfortunately, I won’t be handing out candy this year either.
This morning we took Elsa to the park so she could run around with other dogs and so she could just run along the fence as the cars go by. It tends to be one of her favorite things to do. She cannot get in the fence at the park fast enough to tear across the field to the other side. I like that she does it because it means she is using up energy she needs to burn. She has A LOT of energy.
When we got home, I talked to my retired neighbor Sam who has been working in a gift store out at the Sauvie Island Pumpkin Patch Farm on Saturdays. She has really enjoyed it. It helps pass the time on her weekends. She always spends time with her son on Sunday (hmmm, fitting...son-day...). She retired from her other job this year due to the restrictions of the virus and she was ready to be done working a 9 to 5 anyway. She started working at the gift shop late in the summer. She really loves it. Unfortunately for her, next weekend is the end of their season until next spring. I’ve been to the gift shop and it’s very well put together. Quaint with lots of country kitsch.
I also talked to my neighbor Rob. He gave me a bag of chanterelle mushrooms. I am going to make a scramble or a quiche with them tomorrow. They are a nice size, so there should be quite a few different dishes I can make with them. I know that you do not care for mushrooms, but chanterelles sautéed in butter is heavenly.
Later in the afternoon, I started winterizing the garden. I cut down some of the flowers that had finished and cleaned up the bed around them. I also trimmed the front, left corner of the fence where the sweet peas, daisies, and jasmine vines grown. The whole corner was full up with dying sweet pea vines that had yellowed. I just did those things you do before you plant your fall bulbs or sprinkle out some grass seed. I still have more raking to do, but I pretty much filled up the yard debris can with sedums and sweet pea vines, so I may have to wait a bit until Friday when the bin gets emptied.
After Paula my neighbor came home from this evening, she brought me a bag of potato buns and a paper bag of left over pastries. She is so giving with her leftovers. I would say that Holly and I get some kind of leftover every week AND Paula will fix two extra portions of dinner dishes and bring them to us. She shared a lovely pasta dish with us last week. We are lucky to have lovely neighbors.
