O2 October, 2020 - Away to Camp Wilkerson & Tall, Tall Trees
Dear, Mom -
Hello from Camp Wilkerson! Kim and I are out in the wilds of Oregon for a little camp weekend. We rolled in at about 5 o’clock. We had a nice, leisurely drive in from the city. It took up about an hour to get here and that is mainly because it is a bit curvy as far as the roads go. We were going through the forest throughout much of the drive. It is a very scenic way to get here. There are three different routes, all varying in time buy about 10 minutes. We took the one that was about 58 minutes in optimum weather (which it was). There really wasn’t a lot of people here when we arrived, but the families with their children started to roll in a bit later. There are a bunch of ‘screamin’ mimis’ running around. It’s camping. We are out here to have a nice time, so it doesn’t’ matter so much.
Kim and I went for a walk up to the top of the camp where people come with their horses and camp. The horses there are so gorgeous. Nella and Rick used to have horses (Kim’s mom and dad), so Kim is no stranger to riding and has a fondness for horses. A lot of the people up there had their dogs with them, as horses and dogs seem to go together. There was a small papillon dog with big black ears, a cattle dog who gave us a warning “woof” and his brothers and sisters who just wagged their tails as we waved to the humans and went on our way.
The weather is a bit cooler than back home in Portland, but still very nice. It was so cool on the road that we thought maybe it had rained, but I really think it is just the October moisture and dew that sticks around in the cooler patches.
We haven’t gotten up to much, but we did have a nice dinner of hotdogs on brioche buns (fancy pants) with chips and a Caesar salad. If there is one thing Kim and I do well when camping, it is EAT! Tomorrow we are going to have taco soup! Your recipe. It is the perfect dinner for camping because you can freeze it, stick it in your cooler, then warm it up on the camp stove. We add the sour cream, Fritos, and cheese and *voila* a delicious dinner. We also have lots of sweets. It’s a must for something we don’t get to do very often.
I will report to you tomorrow what we have gotten up to. I know we plan on a hike and I’ll take lots of pictures. Tonight we are going to forego a fire and save that for tomorrow night. We were pleased to find that we could actually have a fire at this campground because it is much more to the northwest then we are used to going. The bundles of wood are only $5 at the campground, so that is a good deal and, wouldn’t you know it, I just happened to have $5 in my shorts pocket, too! Serendipitous!
This is the area we put out tent.
It had very tall trees and the spots in the campground weren’t too terribly close to one another and separated by lots of foliage. So far the noise seems to be picking up a bit because the kids have been let loose to explore the surroundings. They have bikes and frisbees and dogs to rouse up. They all seem like good kids and I’m sure they’ve been made to stay at home like most kids right now. I heard some of the parents actually doing some homeschooling and some of the kids talking about their lessons, too.
