01 August, 2020 - Fall is Coming? & Roasted Corn

Dear, Mom -

Happy August! I can't believe we are starting to enter the second half of the year already. It has been a strange, six months. I want to believe that the normal days we were used to will return within the next 6 months, but only time will tell. I have to apologize, Mom, because tonight's letter will be short. It is late and I am very tired. I've sat here trying to figure out what to write, but I have writer's block, I guess.

The leaves on the trees are slowly starting to turn and the flowers from the spring are fizzling out. It is getting harder to find new flowers to take pictures of for you. I will keep trying, though. I may end up switching to interesting patterns on leaves as they change color. I usually can find a lot of artful photos in fall leaves. There are brilliant colors or symmetrical patterns. I'll figure something out.

Tonight, Paula was nice enough to throw two ears of corn on her BBQ for us along with her own. It took me back to the days of the M-F Corn Roast and watching Dad and Herb Saager man the huge bbqs of corn. I would have to volunteer to work serving sodas from the Pepsi cart. I'm sure I always felt like it was a hassle, when others were having fun. I'm also sure I probably only had to do it for a half hour and was off the hook. The Billy and I would probably go ride our BMX bikes and eat snow-cones until we both got brain freezes. I do remember winning a balance contest on my bike. It was something along the lines (literally) of staying up on your bike for as long as you could without putting your foot down while following a line in the parking lot. I don't know. It was over 40 years ago! Anyway, I don't remember a whole lot because I was little, but I do remember Dad and Herb, swirled in smoke, turning over hundreds of ears of corn. And, of course, Herb was always smoking a pipe. Ha.

I think I will stop here. It is midnight and I am sleepy. I love you very much. I miss you very much. I'm sending you a HUGE hug and a sweet kiss on the cheek. Take care, Mom. I'll talk to you as soon as I can.
