03 September, 2020 - Whale of a Story & That Little Rabbit
Dear, Mom -
Howdy! I saw you were busy today going through some really neat looking objects. They all looked like they felt fantastic and the colors were really eye-catching. I particularly LOVE the stuffed whale! That is adorable. Maybe we should write a story about the girl and the whale:
There was a whale named Stan. He was a bit different from the other whales in his pod. He was colorful and his skin sparkled and camouflaged him in the water. Sometimes, on a bright, sunny days, you could barely see him at all. It was like he was invisible. Sometimes, the other whales would talk about him when they thought he was off eating kelp. They would say how handsome he was and that they, too, wished they could be as vibrant as he was. He felt bad for his friends. He wanted to help them. He did not like that they were sad. He gathered up some old crab shells and some fish oil. He ground the crab shells into a powder and mixed it with the oil. He made a nice paint out of it. Stan loved to paint. He knew his idea would make his friends happy. There was still something missing, though. Usually his friends had grey backs. He went to his favorite kelp forest and pulled out bits of kelp that were starting to dry on the surface of the ocean. He then asked his friend Oliver the squid if he could spare some ink. He picked up a five sea shells that had been abandoned by their clams and took it all back to his little art studio among a cheerful, warm coral reef. He made red, blue, green, and white paints. He invited his friends over. He asked them to close their eyes. He said he was going to paint something for them and it might tickle! He painted and painted. Pretty soon, he told everyone to open their eyes. All his whale pals were very excited because they all had red polka dot bellies and blue-green backs. He had ground up a couple of conch shells so that the paint would also look like glitter. He even asked a few of his starfish pals if they would stick themselves on the chest of his friends to look like little stars on their hearts! He and his friends celebrated all evening. He then taught them that they could make paints and paint themselves and all be very unique. Stan knew he had the best friends and they all were very creative and swam happily ever after!

There ya go, Mom! My short story about Stan the Whale. Just for you!
We have been enjoying our neighborhood rabbit. I named him “Kanin” (pronounced ka-non) . That means rabbit in Swedish. Plus he can be very fast like he was shot out of a canon. This afternoon, Elsa was very cute. I was inside sitting on the couch and realized I had not seen Elsa the dog for a while. I looked out the front window and she was sitting there with a fixed gaze to the side of the yard. She didn’t budge or move even a millimeter! I wondered what in the world she was looking at so intently. I went out and there was Kanin. Sitting over by my car eating clover. Elsa was being such a good girl. She wasn’t chasing the rabbit, just watching. When I went out to tell her she was very good, she budged like I was saying it was okay to give chase. Then I told her, “No. Rabbit is like kitty. We like kitties. We don’t chase them. We let them be.”. So, she didn’t chase Kanin. She did go closer for better look, but didn’t run. So, I hope our little rabbit gets to bed down here for the fall and winter. Birgit loves the bunny, too. We want to make it feel welcome in our yards. We’ll see how long our little Kanin sticks around!
Okie dokes, kid. I’m off to bed. I’ve got a big weekend with lots of planning and doing. Kim’s birthday is coming and I want her to look forward to it. I will bake her a cake and sing her “Happy Birthday”! She is my bestest friend in the whole world. I wish I could buy her something lovely. I still haven’t carved her spoon. I think I will take her camping next spring. No cost to her. It will all be on me. That way I can start saving over the fall and winter and take her somewhere very nice!
I love you very much, Mom. Have a really, really nice weekend. I will come to see you on Monday or Wednesday. There are a few things that I need to see if I can do on Monday. I will come see you soon regardless.
