20 May, 2020 - Things Got Planted & My Back Got Adjusted
Dear, Mom -
Hello! Great news! I got my garden starts planted. Hooray! I took a picture so you could see the start to my garden:
The first container on the left has cucumbers, basil, and tomatillos. I am very proud of myself because I made a trellis with some wood and wire I had stored for a rainy day. I read that you can save space in your garden by training your cukes to grow up a trellis. Kim said that her cucumbers came out in weird shapes when she grew them up, but I don't care how they look. As long as I can eat them, that's fine with me!
The second container is the 3 ft x 3 ft 'square', cloth container that I ordered. It took quite a bit of dirt, but I don't mind. I put two squash plants in the middle with an upside down tomato cage for them to grow up. There is a whole lot of lettuce on the left side and corners, then some cherry tomatoes starts on the right side. I know that those darn squirrels are going to get in there, so I put cling wrap around it to help stay them out. Tomorrow the anti-squirrel effort continues. I am going to nail in sturdy poles then wrap some garden netting around them. That is where the wooden boxed are a bit more handy, but I'll make do. I
The third container is mainly sandwich tomatoes. Their all still babies, but they are going to take off quickly...if the squirrels don't nibble them or dig in there. Fingers crossed. That is also going to get the netting put around it.
I put Sluggo in all the boxes along with a plant fertilizer that my neighbor Paula said will make all the difference in the world. I hope this means my garden will be full and fruitful. If you look close in the pictures, that is what the little white granules. Also, you may notice there are a couple of pieces of wood tipped slightly against the side of the first and third boxes. This is a trick I learned from a gardener in England. He said if you tip the wood, the slugs will gather under there instead of inside of your garden box. So, I'll let you know over the next couple of days how this method works. He said another trick to keep them out of your box is to put brambles or something with stickers on the limbs around your box. The slugs don't want to crawl over them. I'm going to see how the Sluggo and boards work first. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to let me know. You and day always had lovely gardens that produced really well.
I do plan on getting some cedar bark, or something comparable to put down around and between the boxes. The whole yard over the next couple of years is going to transform into a garden area. I would like to plant some fruit trees, as well. I know we will need to put up new fence soon because the old one is starting to rot off the supports. As soon as I can budget it in, I will put up a new fence and grow a grape vine along it. I'd love to have fresh grapes. I know they grow well around here because there are a few people in the neighborhood who usually have loads of them.
I was able to get my back adjusted today, so I am double tired from that, but also feel better because of it. I wore a brace on my knee all day and it really seemed to help. So, for doing the work I did today with a sore body, I feel like I got a lot accomplished.
Here is a pretty pansy that my neighbor Jennifer had on her front porch.
We stopped by because Elsa the dog always gets a treat and because she is a good friend of ours. She used to have two Husky dogs named William Tell and Daisy. She lost William not quite a year ago, and Daisy over two years ago, so she loves to see Elsa since she no longer has dogs. She makes quilts. She and her mom are obsessed with quilting. She has loads of them in her built in cabinets in her house. Some that she has bought and some that she has made. She has material all over the place. There is always a project going on. Right now she is sewing a cover for some of Holly's musical equipment. She's a good friend to have. Elsa is quite fond of her as well.
Okay, mama. I thought about you all day while I was gardening. I wish you could have been there to help me. It was a bit chilly out, though, so it was better for you to be inside and warm. I love you so very much and cannot wait to give you a HUGE HUG and GINORMOUS SMOOCH. You're the best mom a girl could ask for. Have a great rest of your day!
