23 May, 2020 - Getting Up to All the Things

Dear, Mom -

Hi, Momma. How are you doing today? We are in for warm weather it looks. I am excited because I was chilled to the bone today and the sun was even out! There was just a chill in the air that went right through me.

I'm still prepping the yard for a big load of dirt on Monday. I'm trying to turn the soil repeatedly and pick out all the grass that is still choosing to live in the beds. My garden beds are filled and planted in the back as you've seen, but I still have all the front beds to put a top layer of mulch on so I can then plant my wild flower mix and gazanias.

This is what my gazanias should look like. I haven't seen anything like them in the neighborhood so It will be neat to add them along the fence. I hope dogs don't step on them, though. I think I will keep some in a container, just in case.
This is a succession of the heart of peonies.
I love how the shades generally fade. Pink, light pink, and white with a pink tint.

Sometimes, I wish I could just get the pictures to form a block, but the format of this blog that I'm am using is kinda weird. I guess because it is free, it doesn't allow you to modify most things. That's ok.

This is Elsa the dog early in the morning at the foot of the bed. She is so cozy and just peeks at you, asking quietly for her breakfast, but never too demanding. If I need to rest more, she'll just fall back asleep for awhile until she hears Holly, then she'll go out and ask her politely for her breakfast. It's usually too early, though, so she will just get some treats instead.

I carved a bit tonight. I really want to make a Finnish 'Kuksa' cup. If I can do it, I'll be very excited, but it looks like it may take more carving tools than what I own. Plus I need a vice to hold the wood in order to make more precise holes.

This is the particular one with double holes that I would like to attempt. It's a bit taller and I like the shape slightly more.

All this wood carving is pretty new to me, so as I whittle away I realized what I will need in order to accurately shape the wood and get a good finish. Wood really does speak to you when you carve it. It presents itself to you in a way that you see the design as you carve it.

I can't wait to have more tools to do this.

Well, this is a very late letter, mom. I need to get to bed. I will try to find more interesting things to write about tomorrow and also write earlier in the day when I have more brain power to back the words.

I love you with all my heart and miss you all throughout the day. I will ask to see if we can have a video chat some time on Monday afternoon. Probably sometime between me scooping dirt and filling containers and layering the garden beds. We'll say lunch time or thereabouts. Ha. Fingers crossed it all goes according to plan. I am proud that I have done as much as I have thus far.

Good Night or Good Day, Mom,
Sal💗
